In this paper, the authors investigate whether juvenile salmon carrying a parasite, the salmon fever fluke Nanophyetus salmincola, are more susceptible to mortality when exposed to freshwater bacteria. While no synergistic effect was observed when infected fish were exposed to furunculosis bacteria, significant mortality occurred when the infected fish were exposed to columnaris bacteria. “Understanding how macro- and microparasite co-infections might affect disease in wild salmonids is critical, given that disease might contribute to declining populations, . . . and that these fish are commonly infected by multiple macro- or microparasites or both” (p.210).
